JNU Extends the Age Limit for Student Union Elections, Offering a Second Chance to Pandemic-Hit Students

In a move aimed at rectifying the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has announced a two-year extension to the age limit for contesting student union elections. This decision, passed by the university's general body, offers a second chance to students who were ineligible due to age restrictions during the pandemic period.

The pandemic significantly impacted academic schedules and graduation timelines, leaving many students ineligible to contest elections due to exceeding the existing age limit. Recognising this unfairness, JNU's resolution provides these students with an opportunity to participate in the upcoming student union polls.

"This extension acknowledges the challenges faced by our students during the pandemic," said a JNU spokesperson. "We believe it is crucial to ensure fair and inclusive representation in the student union, and this decision will empower more students to contribute to shaping campus life."

The move has been met with positive reactions from student groups. The All-India Students' Association (AISA) welcomed the decision, stating that it "recognizes the disruption caused by the pandemic and ensures a level playing field for all students." However, some student groups have expressed concerns about the potential impact on existing electoral dynamics.
