ICAI Announces Increased CA Exam Frequency: CA Exams to be Held Thrice Annually Starting in 2024

In a major announcement for aspiring chartered accountants, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has decided to increase the frequency of CA exams. Starting in 2024, the CA exams will now be held three times a year, as announced on the ICAI official website.

This change is expected to benefit students by providing them with more flexibility and reducing the pressure of waiting for a whole year to retake an exam if needed. It also allows students to strategically plan their attempts based on their preparation level.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has implemented a significant reform for CA aspirants. Starting in 2024, the CA Foundation and Intermediate exams will be conducted three times annually. Previously, these CA exams were held only twice a year.

This decision aligns with global trends toward offering more frequent exams. ICAI president, CA Ranjeet Kumar Agarwal, emphasised this point, stating, "Globally, the frequency of examinations is increasing, providing students with more opportunities to take the exam. Considering this, ICAI has decided to increase the frequency." This increased flexibility allows students to:

  • Reduce Exam Pressure: Students can retake exams sooner if needed, reducing the stress of waiting a full year.
  • Strategize Attempts: They can plan their exam attempts based on their preparation cycles, potentially leading to faster completion of the course.
  • Accommodate Unexpected Delays: Those facing unforeseen circumstances, like illness, will have more chances to get back on track.

The new schedule includes exams in January, May/June, and September. The frequency of the CA Final exam will remain unchanged, being held twice a year.

This move is expected to benefit a large pool of students. With a record-breaking 4.36 lakh students appearing for the May 2024 exams, the increased frequency can significantly impact their journeys towards becoming chartered accountants. ICAI aims to bridge the gap between current numbers and the projected need of 30 lakh CAs by 2047.

Candidates are advised to stay updated on the ICAI official website for the detailed exam schedule and application process.
