IIT Kharagpur Shakes Up Undergraduate Programs: Dual Degrees, Double Majors, and Global Adventures Await!

In a major reform aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT KGP) has announced significant changes to its undergraduate programs starting from the academic year 2024–25. These reforms aim to provide students with a more versatile and enriching educational experience.

A key change is the introduction of five-year dual degree programs. Students will now have the option to pursue a combined BTech or BS degree along with a Master's degree in a different field after their second or third year. This allows for deeper specialisation or exploration of interdisciplinary interests.

IIT KGP is also introducing double major options, enabling students to pursue two majors within their chosen engineering discipline or across different disciplines. This broadens their skillset and opens doors to diverse career paths.

Further enriching the learning experience, the institute will offer a "Semester Abroad Program" (SAP). Students can spend a semester at a reputed international university, research institute, or industry partner, gaining global exposure and valuable cross-cultural perspectives.

"These reforms are designed to empower students with greater flexibility and choice in shaping their academic journey," said a spokesperson for IIT Kharagpur. "By aligning with the NEP 2020's vision, we aim to nurture well-rounded graduates who are adaptable, innovative, and ready to thrive in the dynamic global workplace."

This move by IIT Kharagpur is expected to be a trendsetter for other technical institutions in India, fostering a more holistic and industry-relevant approach to engineering education.
