Bachelor of Technology (BTech) is a professional undergraduate engineering degree programme awarded to candidates after they complete four years of study in the field. Engineering is one of the most popular courses in India and there are many institutes that offer the course to aspiring students.
For admissions, the most common BTech entrance examinations are JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Along with these national level entrance examinations, there are many state and private level entrance examinations that the students can attempt for admission to the course. The basic eligibility criteria for BTech is class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. However, there are additional criteria in every entrance exam and institute. Some of the institutes also conduct admission to their courses on merit basis i.e. based on marks scored by candidates in their class 12 board exams.
What is the Engineering Admission Process?
Step1- Registration: In this step, students need to create an account by entering basic details like email-id, phone number etc.
Step2- Application Form: Fill the application form with all necessary details. Care must be taken to ensure all details are accurate and correct.
Step3- Uploading of documents: Scan and upload all requisite documents like mark sheets, photograph and signature. Documents need to be uploaded in a specific format only, as specified by the institute’s application portal.
Step4- Payment of Application Fees: Candidates have to pay the application fees either online or offline.
Step5 - Downloading of admit card: Admit cards are released once all applicants are judged for eligibility. The admit card must be downloaded and printed out to be used on the day of the examination.
Step6 - Entrance Exam: Prepare for the exam as per the syllabus and past papers. Appear for the examination on the date announced.
Step7 - Results: Results are announced after a couple of weeks of the exam day. If a candidate is successful in qualifying the entrance examinations, they can move on to the next round.
Step8 - Counseling and admission: Counselling is held for students who have cleared the entrance examinations. The student can now take admission in the BTech Mechanical Engineering course.
Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Engineering
Eligibility criteria are necessary to receive admission from targeted students and aspiring engineers. Various subject courses and mark scores are required for the engineering admission process. The eligibility criteria for UG and PG are different as per the need of universities.
For Undergraduate degree
Candidates must have scored at least 60% in class 12.
Candidates must have completed their 12th in science stream with maths, physics, chemistry, and biology as a part of their subjects.
Admission is granted based on Entrance exam scores or based on merit depending on the institutions.
For Postgraduate degree
Candidates must have scored at least 60% in the previous bachelor degree course.
Individuals must have completed their bachelor's degree in BE/B.TECH.

Entrance Exams for Engineering Course
With lakhs of candidates wanting to pursue engineering courses in India, entrance exams must be conducted for the admission process. Various entrance exams are held by many universities for engineering courses.
JEE Main
- JEE Main is an online National Level entrance exam conducted to grant admission for engineering programs. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and is 3 hours long.
JEE Advanced- JEE Advanced or Joint Entrance Exam Advanced is a 3 hour long online national level entrance exam conducted by one of the IITs every year.
BITSAT- Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences conducts BITSAT (BITS Admission Test) to screen the candidates for admissions to various engineering courses like B.Tech in Information Technology, B.Tech in Computer Science and so on.
VITEEE- VIT Vellore conducts VITEEE, a computer-based test for admissions into various undergraduate engineering courses offered by its participating campuses.
SRMJEEE
- SRM Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed University) conducts the Joint Engineering Entrance examination for admission to UG engineering programs (B.E./B.Tech) on the basis of candidates' scores in the entrance test.
KEAM
- The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE), Kerala conducts the Kerala Engineering, Architecture and Medical (KEAM) entrance exam to offer admission into various engineering colleges in the state.
GATE- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an online entrance exam conducted to grant admissions to postgraduate engineering courses in IITs. The exam is conducted by IITs on a rotational basis. It is conducted once a year and is 3 hours long. More than 1000 universities accept students with GATE scores to grant them admissions to the PG engineering courses.
