Masterclass Skipped? High-scoring undergrads can now fast-track to a PhD.

Good news for high-achieving students with four-year undergraduate degrees! The University Grants Commission (UGC) has relaxed its eligibility criteria for PhD programs. According to UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, these students can now appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) and pursue PhDs directly, provided they secure a minimum of 75% marks or an equivalent grade in their undergraduate coursework.

A master's degree was previously required in order to be eligible for NET. With this change, qualified students can now expedite their route to a PhD in the topic of their choice. Regardless of their undergraduate subject, they can take the NET exam in a field related to their PhD goals.

It is anticipated that this choice will simplify the Indian research environment and help students. On June 16, 2024, the NET exam will take place in an offline format. Applications are open until May
