From Jail Cells to Diplomas: Over 10,000 Earn Degrees at Assam Open University

Second Chance at Education: Over 10,000 Learners, Including Jail Inmates and Septuagenarians, Awarded Degrees from Assam Open University In a heartening testament to the power of education, Krishna Kantaka Handique State Open University, or KKHSOU University in Assam, recently held its sixth convocation ceremony. Over 10,880 learners received their degrees, diplomas, and PhDs, marking a significant milestone in their academic journeys at Assam Open University.

This year's graduating class holds a special significance. Among the awardees were seven inspiring individuals who had been incarcerated. Their stories highlight the transformative power of education, even within the confines of a jail. Alongside them, two septuagenarians, proving that learning has no age limit, were also honoured for their academic achievements.

The ceremony, graced by Assam Governor and Chancellor Gulab Chand Kataria, saw a diverse range of learners celebrate. Nearly half (49%) of the awardees were women, showcasing their increasing participation in higher education. A total of 13 PhDs were also conferred, underscoring the commitment of Krishna Kantaka Handique State Open University, or KKHSOU University, to fostering advanced learning.

This news is a welcome reminder that education can be a powerful tool for rehabilitation and personal growth. It offers opportunities for inmates to develop new skills, improve their job prospects upon release, and contribute positively to society. For all the graduates, this convocation marks a significant accomplishment and paves the way for a brighter future.
