What is M.Des?

The Master of Design programme is a two-year postgraduate degree. As an advanced degree in the field of design, an M.Des degree allows you to specialise and research in a variety of disciplines such as Craft, Textiles, Publications, Media, Lifestyle Products, Graphics, and User Experience Design, among others. Students from any discipline can pursue M.Des, but they must have a fundamental grasp of the relevant design discipline in which they choose to study M.Des. Students with an M.Des degree can apply for careers in a variety of sectors, including Industrial Engineering and Design, Product Research Analyst, Communication Design, Product Design and Engineering, Visual Design, Animation, and Automotive Designing, among others.

Eligibility Criteria

Admission to the Master of Design programme is granted only if the student meets the university/eligibility institute's requirements. Universities will not admit a student if he or she does not meet the eligibility requirements. Each university has its own set of M.Des qualifying requirements. In general, the M.Des qualifying criteria are listed below.
  • Candidates must have a bachelor's degree/diploma in design with at least 50% overall grades.
  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree in Architecture/Engineering may also apply.

This degree programme is intended for those with a limited range of skills. Students must be creative, confident, and have a knack for writing in order to thrive in Master of Design. An M.Des degree requires the following skills:

Application Process

Admission to M.Des programmes at universities/institutions is dependent on the candidate's performance in the entrance test. CEED is the top-level admission test for Master of Design programmes. Candidates must take the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). The CEED test has no age restrictions. The CEED examination is open to anybody. Candidates with bachelor's degrees are eligible to take the test. Following the admission exams, a personal interview is held. Some colleges also accept candidates who have passed the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
  • Direct Admissions: Individuals can apply for admission directly by visiting the institution, filling out the admission form, attaching the appropriate papers, and submitting it offline. Candidates can also apply by going to the college's official website, filling out the application form, and attaching the necessary documents in the manner stated. The registration fee is also expected to be paid at the time of application.
  • Entrance Examinations: Most universities and colleges admit students based on merit; nevertheless, certain universities and colleges may have their own M.Des admission tests (Master of Design).
