IIT Kanpur admission to all UG and PG courses is through national entrance tests. The institute accepts JEE Advanced scores for admission to the main B.Tech program. Candidates seeking admission must clear the JEE Main exam to appear in the JEE Advanced exam. Registration for it usually starts in July after clearing all stages of JEE Mains. The final selection will be made through the JoSAA Counseling seat allocation process. There will be a total of 6 rounds of counseling and seats will be allotted based on parameters like JEE Advanced rank, seat availability, category, etc. The general category cutoff for the most sought-after B.Tech CSE stream in JEE Advanced is between 95 and 919.

Apart from its flagship program, IIT Kanpur offers B.Sc., B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Sc., M.Sc., M.Sc., and dual degree programs. Admission to these courses is based on the marks obtained in entrance exams like GATE, JAM, CEED, and CAT. M.Tech and M.S admission is based on GATE score followed by counseling. Institute may conduct personal interviews for final selection. For admission to M.Sc programs, IIT Kanpur selects candidates based on IIT JAM scores.

Along with UG and PG courses, IIT Kanpur offers Ph.D. in various disciplines. Applicants with a master's degree in a relevant discipline are eligible for admission. IIT Kanpur inaugurated its 2020-21 placement drive with 226 placement offers wherein Graviton Trading picked 3 students for a package worth INR. 82 LPA and QuantBox offered a package of INR. 80 LPA to one student.

The institute concluded the First Phase of its recruitment process with 821 offers which were provided by 230+ recruiters. The placement drive witnessed the highest participation from coding and software firms (59%), the core firms contributed about 18% of the total placement offers.

The hostels/ residence halls of IIT Kanpur made it easy for the students to access the academic blocks and other facilities at the campus. The hostels of IIT Kanpur are well equipped with all the latest facilities such as mess/canteen, recreational activities, sports facilities, etc. The hostel facility is available for both domestic and international students. IIT Kanpur has 10 Boys Hostel and 2 Girls Hostel along with one girl's residence tower. The hostels at the institute are together called as Halls of Residence and all the newly admitted undergraduate students are allotted in the Hall 2, 3, 5 and 10. However, the rooms are available in twin sharing for the 1st and 2nd year undergraduate students and the single sharing rooms are only available for the students of 3rd and 4th year.
