What is CBSE?

CBSE abbreviated as Central Board of Secondary Education is a secondary education board system, controlled and managed by the Central Government of India. The CBSE board system is adopted by more than 24,000 schools in India and is set as the leading education board in India. It was established in 1929 with the aim of integration and cooperation in the sphere of secondary education. Schools affiliated with the CBSE board all follow the NCERT syllabus. Its current secretary is Shri Anurag Tripathi, IRPS who took up the post back in 2017.

In 2018, the CBSE board decided to revert back to the old CCE system where students had to study the whole textbook as portions for their board exams. This was contrary to the previous years where the syllabus was divided into 2 different terms. Further in 2020, CBSE decided to cancel the 10th examinations and postpone the 12th secondary examinations due to the covid-19 pandemic. In the following year, CBSE decided to switch back to the 50-50 syllabus system with two terms.

History of CBSE:

The CBSE board boasts a long history of achievements and establishments. It started by setting up 10 regional offices in 1990 throughout various parts of the country such as:

  • Guhawati
  • Panchkula
  • Bhubaneshwar
  • Patna
  • Deharadun
  • Thiruvananthapuram
  • Ajmer
  • Allahabad
  • Chennai

In 2014, the CBSE board conducted the UGC national eligibility test which aimed to identify Indian Nationals who were eligible to receive the JRF and Assistant Professorship. They also set up the education cell which was aimed to provide schools with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to aid students with disabilities. This was done with the help of psychiatrists and physiologists who provided the teachers and staff with the necessary training.

2015 saw the CBSE board expand into the digital front. The board now started issuing its examination certificates through Global Document Type identifier or ‘GDTI’. A mobile app, e-CBSE and online facility by the name of ‘SARANSH’ were also introduced to help schools perform a complete review of themselves.

Further achievements of the CBSE include the OASIS system in 2016 which provided ample information on CBSE schools, faculty and exam centres and the Parinam Manjusha scheme that made it possible for students to view and access their academic records through Digi-Locker. Additionally, the board has also created accounts on various platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp and Youtube for further interaction and communication with students and parents. The board also made sports and health education compulsory in 2018 for classes 9-12. Sachin Tendulkar identified this as a great way to encourage the growth of sports in the country, for which he wrote a letter to the board appreciating the scheme.

Eligibility Criteria:

There are standard passing criteria for candidates that appear for the CBSE secondary board examinations. These are:
